Introduction to sets

sets

 1) In mathematics, a set is a well- defined collection of objects.

2) The arrangement of the objects in the set does not matter.

ex.{ 1,2,3} and {3,1,2} are same set.

3) Find out which of the following collections are sets:-

i) odd  natural numbers less than 10

= {1,3,5,7,9} this is a well defined collection of elements therefore it is a set.

ii) The rivers of India

= The rivers of India are properly defined, this collection is a set.

iii) The vowels in the english alphabet

= it is a set.

iv)All beautiful people of India

= It is not a set.

v) Prime factors of 210

={2,3,5,7} it is a set.

4)  Discrete sets and Continuous sets:

=> Continuous set is also called intervals
